 Database/OLAP/Web Minimize
Project Type: Transactional Processing & Reporting
Department(s): Network Operations Center/Engineering
Background:

Our client’s alarm and outage tracking system for an extensive data network was inflexible and prone to errors. They asked for an extremely reliable system to monitor alarms and outages so they could focus on improving problem-resolution response time and for remote data entry tools for their technicians.

Solution:

dymetrics, inc. worked closely with the client’s Data Analysis and Reporting team to build an application - under an extremely tight deadline - providing them flexibility entering, viewing, and reporting tools for all alarms and outages. We developed an OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) cube to report on outages via a web page for easy user access.

In addition, we developed an SMS notification module allowing field techs in all service areas to enter logs into the system simply by sending a message via their cell phone, ensuring real-time data was captured in near real-time.

Comments:

To better calculate the true cost of outages, we built a new metric into the reporting cubes to calculate the estimated lost minutes of use for each outage. In essence, lost traffic equals lost sales, and tracking this metric is critical.

We also created a search engine to help users quickly locate logs entered in the system. The search engine finds logs by the person who entered it, the location of the alarm or outage, and the text of any notes that were recorded in the log itself.
